Seriously, with all the food and booze on cruise ships, how can you not gain a few pounds?

The key is to adjust a few of your daily activities, so you can afford to do those fun cruise things like midnight ice cream and pizza.

The beauty of these suggestions is that you don’t have to stick to a strict regimen to avoid cruise weight gain.  You can choose a few or even rotate them all during the cruise and you’ll still see results.


Take the stairs.  As much as possible.

On a cruise with my sister, we vowed to only take the stairs for the entire cruise.  At one point, we passed the same elevator as it stopped to pick up passengers on each floor.  We all got a good laugh as we all met on the deck level.

Use the gym. What is there not to love about a free, contract-less gym membership?  Plus you get the best views of the sea or the location that you’ve arrived at.  Get up early so you don’t get caught in the rush.

Stay active.  The more active you are, the more fit you’ll be.  Chose your activities wisely.  For example, pick swimming over an outdoor movie.

Rest.  Getting enough rest is essential to weight maintenance.  Sure you’re trying to stuff as much as possible into your cruise, but put off sleeping.  It’s recommended that adults get at least eight hours a night.

Avoid soda’s.  Even fruit juices have a considerable amount of sugar – and drinking sugar accounts for a considerable amount of calorie intake.

In fact, replacing one regular soda avoids about 10 teaspoons of sugar.  Opt for water at every meal to avoid cruise weight gain.  Adding lemon or orange slices helps with flavor.

Eat lots of seafood.  Seafood is one of the things I love best about dining on a cruise ship.  Choose seafood options whenever possible, since they are better for your body and less fattening.  Your body also has an easier time digesting these proteins.

 Eat 1 meatless meal every day.  You decide which.

Substitute the meat protein with other protein sources including soy products, beans, legumes, quinoa, nuts, nut butters and other whole grains.
