Research where to eat

For anyone with a passion for food, Puerto Rico is a real delight. Similar to Spanish, Cuban and Mexican food, Puerto Rico’s cuisine is influenced by Spain, Africa, and America and is rich in herbs, spices, and other flavorings like coriander, cacao, apio, chilli, plantains, and yampee.

This type of cooking can be traced back to the Arawaks and Tainos, who first inhabited the island and lived off a diet of seafood, corn, and fruit.

The dishes that you must taste while in Puerto Rico include Mofongo – deep fried green plantains, mixed with onion, garlic, olive oil and pork or prawns; Pernil – slow-roasted pork marinated in herbs and spices; and Arroz con gandules – a mixture of rice, peas, pork, herbs and spices all cooked in one pot. There are some amazing restaurants on the island, the best of which are locally-run, authentic places.

Plan what to see and do

Despite being a small island, Puerto Rico has plenty to see and do. One trip is never enough! However, during your time on this magical island, you can easily soak in your fill of history, heritage, and culture.

Another must-visit place is El Yunque National Forest, a tropical rainforest located in the north of the island. Not only can you explore the forest from the ground, but starting at the El Portal Visitor Center, you can explore via a treetop walkway.

Old San Juan is also worth a visit. This is the oldest and most beautiful settlement in Puerto Rico and is the most historic colonial section of the island.

Love history? Then a trip to Castillo San Felipe del Morro is a must. This is a 16th-century building in San Juan that was built by the Spanish as a fortress.
