“I guess it’s time.”
We immediately loosened our pants, making small talk before we lost our nerve.
The sudden action caught Metro riders by surprise and they gawked at our antics. Some in amusement, others in disgust, many in disinterest – the typical city perspective.
No Pants Metro Ride
The day was January 12, 2012, it was unseasonably warm, and we were on the Green line heading towards Branch Avenue without pants.
It wasn’t long before we realized that side of town was less tolerant towards our antics. We hoped off the train at Navy Yard and made our way in the opposite direction.
We completed a few circles around the metro system, looping around the city until we were hungry.
Cobalt hosted us for a No Pants Metro Ride after party. Even the bartenders joined in and dropped and enthusiastically dropped their pants.
Improve Everywhere, who’s tagline is “We Cause Scenes” did just that when regular looking folks decided to bare their buns for this once a year opportunity. Based out of New York, this group stages various events that a bring absurd situations to life.

Why We Did It
Contrary to the many questions we received, we weren’t protesting anything.
Contrary to the many answers we provided, No Pants Metro Ride was just something fun to do. A huge joke on DC Metro riders.
We made up tons of fun alibis including a trendy fad, enjoying the warm weather, and my personal favorite, losing the pants in a bet.
For a borderline goodie two shoes, I always hop on the opportunity to be a little deviant. The participants were varied in age, ethnicity and taste of undergarments.
It’s interesting to think that more events like No Pants Metro Ride could bring diverse groups together, under a single cause like few other efforts can.
Give it a Whirl
If you want to get in on the fun:
The Bad News: You’ll have to wait until January.
The Good News: You don’t have to travel all the way to DC. This event took place in over 50 cities worldwide!
A few things to consider:
- It’s a huge joke. So make up any excuse you want as to why you’re not wearing pants!
- Take a friend or two. Experiences are so much better when you share them.
- Get creative with your outfit. My favorite are those wearing suits sans pants.
I can’t wait to see your No Pants Metro Ride pictures next year!
